The entrepreneurial community school

Learning to empower oneself, to be entrepreneurial
and to create innovation.
Training independent citizens who are accountable and aware of their impacts on themselves, others and their environment.

In an Entrepreneurial Community School, the school team, the families and the members of the community establish an organized human environment. This educational, dynamic and creative ecosystem works and collaborates to respond to the educational needs and pedagogical innovation. Together, they make a school community. The community concept represents the number of people who make up an environment or a larger group, united by common goals related to language, the economy, education, culture or some other topic.

The Entrepreneurial Community School is directly linked to the social landscape as the programming of the institution meets the needs of the community and the school-community members support students’ learning by sharing their resources and expertise. Students are brought to discover and appreciate their socioeconomic environment as well as create close relationships with their communities.

The innovation and collaboration implemented often come from the educational, social and economic development of their regional community, their national community as well as their global community.

The Entrepreneurial Community School (ECS) prepares innovative and conscious youth and adults to serve dynamic, creative and sustainable human environments. Often faced with a decision-making situation, they will exercise their sense of responsibility and freedom of choice. Entrepreneurship thus becomes a learning tool (on this topic, see Pépin, 2015) through which youth can develop qualities to succeed in their personal and professional life. Educational entrepreneurship is:

  • Being able to identify an immediate need in your environment.
  • Validating that need through consultation and a market analysis.
  • Trying to understand the correlation between the need and the elements accessible in the environment.
  • Developing, alone or as part of a team, an ideal solution for both yourself and the community.
  • Measuring the impacts of the chosen solution on people and the environment.
  • Contributing to the sustainable development and to the society – economy – ecology balance.
  • Evaluating the method and its results.

The conscious dimension defines entrepreneurship as being first and foremost an interaction method from oneself to another. It questions the impact of each person towards themselves, their community, society and the environment. In an entrepreneurial community school, students progressively create innovation thanks to various experiences, within which the ethical dimension is constantly solicited. A heightened conscience and accountability are the central elements of the conscious entrepreneurial approach.

Following a holistic education perspective, the entrepreneurial community school invites to make choices, which contribute to a new social, economic and environmentally friendly equilibrium. On a planet where there are more than 7 billion human beings, we cannot act independently from one another and the choices that we make have direct and indirect repercussions elsewhere. The entrepreneurial community school gave itself a community-conscious mandate, convinced that global awareness will follow.

Philosophy

Program

Approach

Empowerment

A school that fosters the identification of needs and decision-making by building on the school community, the potential of each of these components and the ability for life long learning.

Accountability

A school that assumes, together with community partners, the responsibility of educating and training child or youth, and where such responsibility is based on the search for fairness.

Transformation

A school that becomes the premise for many forms of partnerships engaging people, groups, organizations, businesses and entrepreneurs, in a way that brings forth progressive changes.

Community spirit

A school that fosters mutual openness between all actors, thus offering a solid foundation for a viable educational landscape, coming from the empowerment of the community.

Implementing an ECS does not involve the modification of existing school curricula or academic subjects. The ECS is integrated to the educational organization, fostering a pedagogy based on conscious entrepreneurship.
